Trchkan Waterfall: Armenia's Jumping Wonder

Trchkan Waterfall, nestled on the border of the Lori and Shirak provinces, is a stunning natural wonder and Armenia's tallest waterfall. The waterfall plunges 23.5 meters (77 feet) down the Chichkhan River, a tributary of the Pambak River, creating a breathtaking cascade. The surrounding area is known for its lush greenery and diverse ecosystem, with various plant, bird, and animal species, some of which are registered in the Red Book. The name 'Trchkan,' meaning 'jumping' in Armenian, originates from an interesting natural phenomenon. The Chichkhan River is home to trout that migrate upstream to spawn. Villagers observed these fish leaping out of the water and over the waterfall, giving it the name 'Trchkan'. Some locals also call the waterfall 'Chran,' imitating the sound of the cascading water. Trchkan Waterfall was officially recognized as a natural monument in 2008, and the surrounding area was designated as a protected area in 2011. This designation came after local activists and environmentalists successfully prevented the construction of a hydroelectric power plant that threatened the waterfall's existence. Visitors can explore the area around the waterfall, discovering picnic spots and trails that offer different perspectives of the falls. In winter, the waterfall freezes, creating a unique and beautiful icy spectacle. Nearby, you can find the ancient Chichkhanavank Monastery, dating back to the 7th century.
