Created by sculptor Karlen Nuridjanyan in 1982, the statue portrays Torq Angegh, a deity from Armenian mythology known for his immense power and courage. According to legend, Torq Angegh was the great-grandson of Hayk, the patriarch of the Armenian people. He was said to be a giant with a rough appearance, possessing unnatural strength. Tales describe him splitting rocks with his bare hands, carving eagles into them with his nails, and hurling boulders at enemy ships. The sculpture itself is made of forged copper and stands 4.8 meters tall. It depicts Torq Angegh with a rock fragment raised above his head, poised to strike, symbolizing strength and readiness to defend. The monument was commissioned by the executive committee of the Soviet district of Yerevan, with plans to create an artificial lake nearby to represent the Pontic Sea, though this was never realized. Today, Torq Angegh remains a significant landmark in Yerevan, offering panoramic views of the city. It serves as a reminder of Armenia's rich mythological past and the enduring spirit of its people.
