    Discover more about Spandarian Reservoir

Spandarian Reservoir, located in the Syunik province, is one of Armenia's most picturesque bodies of water. Created in 1980 by damming the Vorotan River between Jermuk and Goris, the reservoir was primarily intended for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation. The Spandarian Hydro Power Plant, commissioned in 1989, is a key component of the Vorotan Cascade, a series of power plants and reservoirs that contribute significantly to Armenia's energy production. The reservoir's location, set against the stunning Zangezur Mountains, makes it a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The sheer scale of the reservoir is impressive, holding an active capacity of 218 million cubic meters of water and covering a surface area of 10.8 square kilometers. Its waters reflect the dramatic landscape, offering breathtaking views, especially on clear days. While primarily a functional body of water, Spandarian Reservoir also offers recreational opportunities. Fishing is a popular activity, attracting both locals and tourists. The surrounding area, while somewhat remote, provides a sense of tranquility and an opportunity to connect with nature. The reservoir is also a stop on some tours. Historically, the creation of the Spandarian Reservoir led to the submersion of two towns, Bazarchay and Borisovka, which had been home to Russian Old Believer communities. The residents were resettled in nearby Gorayk and Tsghuk, marking a significant change in the region's cultural landscape.
