Discover more about The Iron Fountain

The Iron Fountain, located on the outskirts of Gyumri, is a unique example of Soviet modernism and a symbol of the city's resilience. Officially named the “Friendship Fountain,” it was designed by the renowned Armenian architect Artur Tarkhanyan and completed in 1982. Tarkhanyan is also known for his work on the Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan and the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex. The fountain was once the centerpiece of the Polytechnic University of Gyumri campus, serving as a gathering place for students and residents. The 1988 Spitak earthquake, which registered 6.8 on the Richter scale, devastated much of Gyumri, destroying approximately 80% of the city. The Iron Fountain was one of the few structures that withstood the disaster, a testament to the strength and durability of Tarkhanyan's design. Today, the Iron Fountain stands in an abandoned state, a relic of its former glory. Despite its disrepair, the fountain continues to draw tourists with its monumentality and unique design. Some locals refer to it as the "UFO fountain" because its structure resembles a flying saucer. The architect's daughter has been trying to persuade authorities to restore the fountain, but without success. However, a restoration proposal has been developed by “A3 Architects,” including a 3D animation that envisions the fountain restored to its original state. Even in its current state, the Iron Fountain remains a poignant symbol of Gyumri's past, representing both the visionary work of Artur Tarkhanyan and the enduring spirit of a city that has overcome tremendous adversity.
