Discover more about Odzun Church

Nestled in the village of Odzun, in the Lori Province of Armenia, the Odzun Church stands as a testament to the country's rich religious and architectural heritage. This Armenian basilica, dating back to the 5th-7th centuries, has evolved over time, with significant reconstruction in the 8th century by Catholicos Hovhannes III Odznetsi, giving it its present form. The name 'Odzun' itself is derived from the Armenian word 'otsel,' meaning 'to ordain,' reflecting the village's historical significance as a place where priests were ordained in the early days of Christianity. The church's architecture is characterized by a pink felsite basilica design with three naves. Unique arcaded cloisters adorn its northern and southern sides, adding to the structure's volume and visual appeal. Inside, the church features a barrel-vaulted roof supported by six columns. The facades are decorated with intricate carvings depicting biblical scenes, including Christ, angels, and evangelists. One of the distinctive features of Odzun Church is a rare funerary monument located to the northeast of the church. This monument, possibly a gift from an Indian king, showcases ornate carvings of biblical scenes and geometric motifs. The monument is believed to commemorate Hovhannes Odznetsi, although its style suggests a 6th-century origin. The east and west sides of the monument are carved with scenes from the Bible and the introduction of Christianity in Armenia. The north and south sides feature geometrical motifs and floral shapes. Odzun Church has undergone several renovations throughout its history. In the 19th century, the tiled roof was replaced with tufa stone, and two belfries were added. Restoration works were also carried out during the Soviet era. Today, Odzun Church stands as a prominent landmark in the Lori Province, attracting visitors with its historical significance and architectural beauty. The church provides a glimpse into Armenia's religious past and artistic traditions.
