Discover more about The Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters

The Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters is a cultural gem in Gyumri, Armenia, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the artistic legacy of two remarkable sisters. Established in 1987, the gallery features an extensive collection of paintings, ceramics, and graphic works donated by Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan themselves. With over 620 original works, it stands as the largest collection of their art in the world and the only museum in Armenia named after and devoted to female artists. The gallery is housed in a beautiful two-story building that dates back to 1880. Originally constructed as a private residence for the wealthy Qeshishov family, the building is an architectural landmark in Gyumri's historic Kumayri district. The building's architecture reflects a fusion of European and traditional Armenian elements. The interior features two floors, with Yeranuhi's works displayed on the first floor and Mariam's on the second. The gallery also has an inner courtyard and a wooden balcony, typical of 19th-century urban architecture in Gyumri. After the devastating 1988 earthquake, the building temporarily sheltered homeless families and was reopened in 2004. The Aslamazyan sisters, Mariam (1907-2006) and Eranuhi (1910-1998), were celebrated Armenian artists who made significant contributions to Soviet-era art. They both studied at the Leningrad Institute of Arts in Russia. Mariam's art often depicted vibrant scenes of Armenian life, while Eranuhi's works explored more intimate and sensual themes. Together, they challenged the male-dominated Soviet art world and promoted the role of women in the arts. Their art promotes gender equality and highlights the role of female artists in Soviet-Armenian society.
