From the center of Haghpat, head southwest towards the Haghpat Monastery. Follow the road leading out of Haghpat, which is marked with signs. Continue walking along the road for about 4 kilometers until you reach the fork. Take the right path that leads you towards Akhtala. After about 1 kilometer, you will see the Akhtala Monastery Fortress on your left. The monastery is situated on a hill, so be prepared for a slight uphill walk towards the entrance.

Starting from the main square in Haghpat, look for a minibus heading towards Akhtala. These minibuses usually have 'Akhtala' displayed on their front. Once you board, the journey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest stop to Akhtala Monastery Fortress. After disembarking, walk approximately 10 minutes along the main road, and you will see the fortress on the hillside.
