Discover more about Zorats Church

Located near the village of Yeghegis in Armenia's Vayots Dzor province, Zorats Church, also known as Zorats Khach, presents a striking contrast to traditional Armenian churches. Built in 1303 by Bishop Stepanos Tarsayich of the Orbelian dynasty, this 14th-century church distinguishes itself with an open-air altar, a design intentionally crafted to accommodate mounted soldiers. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Armenia faced turbulent times as a tributary of the Mongols and constant threat from the Mamluks. Yeghegis was at the forefront of sending out warriors for battle. The church's unique design allowed soldiers to receive blessings before heading into battle without dismounting their horses. The elevated altar, equal in height to a person on horseback, ensured warriors could participate in the liturgy while remaining mounted. Today, Zorats Church stands as a symbol of Yeghegis and one of Vayots Dzor's most famous churches. While it no longer hosts mounted soldiers, it remains a place of spiritual significance and architectural interest, drawing visitors to marvel at its unique construction and historical importance.
