Levon's Divine Underground: A Subterranean Masterpiece

Levon's Divine Underground, located in the village of Arinj near Yerevan, is a truly unique and fascinating attraction. This intricate cave system is the result of one man's vision and dedication, carved entirely by hand over a period of 23 years. Levon Arakelyan began digging in 1985 at the request of his wife, Tosya, who simply wanted a cellar to store potatoes. However, Levon felt divinely inspired to create something much grander, and he continued to expand the underground space until his death in 2008. Using only basic tools like a hammer and chisel, Levon excavated over 300 square meters of underground chambers, reaching a depth of 21 meters in some places. The labyrinthine complex consists of interconnected hallways, staircases, and uniquely decorated rooms, featuring sculptures and bas-reliefs carved into the rock. Levon claimed to have received supernatural strength and guidance during his work. After Levon's death, Tosya transformed the caves into a museum to honor her husband's legacy. Visitors can explore the caves, now illuminated with candles, and admire the intricate carvings and unique atmosphere. The tour also includes a visit to a room in the family home showcasing Levon's tools, clothing, photographs, and newspaper articles about his incredible achievement. The family also maintains a beautiful garden filled with flowers, plants, and Levon's paintings.
