Discover more about Gndevank

Gndevank Monastery, a hidden gem in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province, offers visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Founded in 936 AD by Princess Sofia of Syunik, the monastery stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and cultural heritage. Princess Sofia, wife of Prince Smbat, immortalized her vision by declaring, “Vayots Dzor was a ring without a stone; I built this monastery as the stone for that ring”. Tucked away in the steep gorge of the Arpa River, near the village of Gndevaz and not far from the resort town of Jermuk, Gndevank provides an atmosphere of solemnity and seclusion. The monastery complex includes the Church of St. Stephen, a gavit (forecourt), and other structures, all constructed from local pinkish stone. The church showcases exquisite craftsmanship with intricate stone carvings and well-preserved frescoes that depict religious scenes. Inside the church, you can find fragments of bas-reliefs portraying Christ and the Virgin Mary. The monastery courtyard features khachkars (cross-stones) dating from the 10th to 16th centuries and cradle-shaped tombstones. Gndevank has served as an important spiritual center throughout the ages, preserving and passing on Armenia's cultural heritage. Despite being near the popular Noravank, Gndevank remains relatively unnoticed, adding to its allure as a place where the stones speak quietly of faith, power, and artistry.
