Modern Art Museum of Yerevan

The Modern Art Museum of Yerevan (MAMY) stands as a pioneering institution in the realm of contemporary art within the former Soviet Union. Established in 1972, it holds the distinction of being the first museum in the region to specialize in modern and contemporary art. The museum's creation was driven by the vision of Henrik Igityan, a painter, with support from Yerevan's mayor, Grigor Hasratyan.The museum's initial collection comprised works by Armenian artists of the 1960s, including those from the Armenian diaspora. These artists generously donated their pieces, forming the foundation of the museum's exhibits. Key artists whose works are featured include Minas Avetisian, Ashot Hovhannisyan, and others. Over time, the museum's collection expanded to include artists from the 1980s and continues to evolve with contributions from the Armenian diaspora.During the Soviet era, the museum played a crucial role in providing a platform for artistic expression that diverged from the constraints of Socialist Realism. Despite facing financial challenges and a lack of government support, the museum thrived thanks to the dedication of artists and patrons.
