    Discover more about Republic Square

Republic Square, known locally as Hraparak, is the heart of Yerevan, Armenia, serving as a major urban and transportation hub. Designed by architect Alexander Tamanian in 1924, the square is a blend of oval and trapezoid sections, surrounded by five significant buildings constructed from pink and yellow tuff stones. These buildings exemplify neoclassical architecture with Armenian motifs. The square's architectural ensemble includes the Government House, easily identified by its clock tower, the History Museum and National Gallery, the Central Post Office, and the Armenia Marriott Hotel. The buildings' facades feature arches, columns, and traditional Armenian ornaments. A large stone mosaic in the center of the square resembles a traditional Armenian rug when viewed from above. One of the main attractions is the singing fountains, which operate from late spring to early fall. The fountains offer a colorful light show accompanied by classical, jazz, pop, and rock music. The water streams and colors change with the rhythm of the music, creating an entertaining spectacle. The fountains typically operate from 9 PM or 10 PM until 11 PM. Throughout its history, the square was known as Lenin Square during the Soviet period, featuring a statue of Vladimir Lenin. After Armenia's independence, the statue was removed, and the square was renamed Republic Square. The square has also been renovated over the years, including a renovation of the singing fountains in 2007. Today, Republic Square is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists, hosting concerts and events.
