Discover more about Yerevan Zoo

Yerevan Zoo, founded in 1940, offers a glimpse into the animal kingdom with a collection of around 3,000 animals representing 300 species. Located on Myasnikyan Avenue, the zoo has grown from its original 3 hectares to a sprawling 35-hectare park. Visitors can observe a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles, including several species native to the South Caucasus and Armenia. These include Syrian brown bears, Bezoar goats, Armenian mouflon, and black vultures. The zoo also houses exotic animals from around the globe, such as lions, tigers, elephants, and hippos. The aquarium and terrarium feature diverse fish and reptile species. The Yerevan Zoo is not just a place to observe animals; it's also an educational and research center. It participates in conservation efforts, including breeding programs for rare and endangered species. In cooperation with the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC), the zoo works to rehabilitate wildlife and reintroduce endangered species into the wild. The zoo also has a school, in cooperation with the FPWC, the municipality of Yerevan, and the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, teaching schoolchildren about biodiversity. Over the years, the zoo has faced challenges, including funding shortages and difficult periods in the early 1990s. However, it has continued to develop, with ongoing efforts to improve animal enclosures and create more natural habitats.
