Discover more about Odzun Church

Nestled in the village of Odzun, the Odzun Church, also known as the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother), is a captivating example of early medieval Armenian architecture. The village of Odzun itself is one of the oldest settlements in the Lori Province. The church's name is believed to originate from the Armenian word “otsel,” meaning “to ordain”. Legend states that Thomas the Apostle ordained priests here in the 1st century and buried Christ's swaddling clothes on the site, marking it as sacred. The original church was constructed between the 5th and 7th centuries. In the 8th century, it was reconstructed by Catholicos Hovhannes III Odznetsi, transforming it into a pink felsite basilica with three naves. The church features unusual arcaded cloisters on its northern and southern sides and a barrel-vaulted roof. Intricate carvings adorn the façades, depicting Christ, angels, and biblical scenes. One of the church's most distinctive features is a rare funerary monument located to the northeast of the church. This monument, dating back to the 6th century, is adorned with carvings of biblical scenes and geometric motifs. It is believed to commemorate Hovhannes Odznetsi, though its style suggests an earlier origin. The monument consists of two narrow obelisk-shaped stelae set between double arches rising from a high platform. Today, Odzun Church stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and artistic brilliance. Its unique architecture, rich history, and stunning natural surroundings make it a truly unforgettable destination. Visitors can explore the church's interior, admire the intricate carvings, and reflect on the centuries of history that have unfolded within its walls.
