Hnevank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Treasure

Hnevank Monastery, meaning "Old Monastery," is a significant Armenian Apostolic Church complex with origins tracing back to the 7th century. Located in the Lori Province, near Kurtan village, the monastery occupies a dramatic position on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Dzoraget and Gargar rivers. Throughout its history, Hnevank has served as a religious, educational, and organizational center. The complex originally comprised three churches, a parish, residential quarters, and various ancillary buildings. The main church, believed to have been constructed in the 7th century, features a unique architectural design. It is rectangular on the outside and cross-shaped on the inside. The dome drum is octagon-shaped externally, adorned with sculptures in the arches. In 1154, Smbat, the son of Ivane Orbelyan, restored the church, as evidenced by a Georgian inscription on the dome. The presence of Georgian inscriptions has led to some debate regarding the monastery's origins; however, it is understood that Georgia's strong regional influence at the time likely explains their presence. The monastery does not contain any khachkars, which suggests that it remained Chalcedonian until late times. Recent renovations by the Armenian government have restored the main church's collapsed dome. Today, Hnevank stands as a testament to Armenia's enduring cultural and religious legacy, inviting visitors to explore its ancient stones and soak in the serene beauty of its natural surroundings.
