Discover more about Goshavank Monastery

Goshavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of Gosh," is a remarkable 12th to 13th-century Armenian monastic complex located in the village of Gosh in the Tavush Province. Originally known as Nor Getik, it was renamed in honor of Mkhitar Gosh, a prominent Armenian scholar, statesman, and author of fables and the first Armenian legal code. The monastery was erected on the site of an older one, Nor Getik, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. Gosh founded a school at the monastery, attracting scholars and scribes, becoming a hub of education, culture, and lawmaking. One of its notable alumni, Kirakos Gandzaketsi, penned 'The History of Armenia'. The complex showcases the architectural mastery of the time, with interconnected churches, chapels, a library, and a gavit (narthex). Key structures within the complex include the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin), built between 1191 and 1196. The Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator features unique decorations, and the complex is also home to some of the finest examples of Khachkars, including one carved in 1291 by Pavgos. The monastery does not have outer walls, blending seamlessly with the village homes.
