The main construction occurred in the 13th century, primarily under the patronage of Prince Vache Vachutyan and his family.The complex includes the Church of Saint Zion, built in 1215, which is a classic example of Armenian architecture with a cruciform interior and a rectangular exterior. The gavit (courtyard) was added in the early 13th century. The Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), constructed in 1235, features a unique altar. A prominent feature is the repository of manuscripts, built in 1255, which once housed a significant collection of texts. Saghmosavank was a vital spiritual, cultural, and educational center during the medieval period.
