Surb Hovhannes Monastery Complex: A Medieval Armenian Treasure

The monastery is named after Hovhannes Imastaser (Hovhannes the Philosopher). He was the 34th Armenian Catholicos, a reformer, theologian, educator, and lawyer, born in nearby Odzun and buried here in Ardvi.The architectural style features a rectangular external plan and an interior cross plan, with a central dome composition. The dome is supported by a polyhedral drum featuring 16 sections. The sides of the drum are adorned with clusters of tall semi-columns, culminating in intricately sculpted capitals. The corners of the square beneath the dome feature vertical jambs that terminate with a cornice.The complex includes a church, vestibule, monastic cells, a refectory, and utility facilities. A two-story school building dating back to the 19th century is also part of the complex. The asymmetrical design of the church's interior suggests that wall paintings were not originally intended.
