Mount Aragats: Armenia's Majestic Four-Peaked Volcano

Mount Aragats, a majestic four-peaked volcano, stands as the highest point in Armenia. Located in the western part of the country, between the Ararat and Shirak plains, it's a prominent feature of the Armenian landscape. The mountain's name is linked to Armenian legends, with one theory suggesting it means "Ara's Throne," after the Armenian god Ara. Aragats is an extinct volcano with four summits: the Northern summit (4,090 meters), the Western summit (3,995 meters), the Eastern summit (3,908 meters), and the Southern summit (3,888 meters). The mountain's slopes are dotted with historical and cultural sites, including ancient fortresses, petroglyphs, and medieval monuments like Amberd Fortress and Byurakan Observatory. Hiking Mount Aragats is a popular activity, with the best time to visit being from June to September when the trails are dry. The Southern summit is the most accessible, requiring no special gear and offering stunning views of Mount Ararat, Lake Sevan, and the Geghama Range on a clear day. More experienced hikers can attempt the Northern, Eastern and Western summits, which offer a greater challenge.
