The monastery's origins trace back to the 7th century, with the oldest church dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator. In the late 12th century, Princes Ivane and Zakare Zakarian acquired the site and significantly expanded it, adding a new church, fortress walls, and other structures, transforming it into a prominent cultural and educational hub.The complex features two main churches: the 7th-century Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator and the Cathedral of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), built in 1201. The Cathedral is known for its impressive dome and unique architectural style, influencing the construction of other churches in Armenia. The monastery also includes two gavits (narthexes), a school, a chapel, a bell tower, and various farm buildings. The main temple showcases a checkerboard pattern created with different colors of tufa stone, adding to its visual appeal.Throughout its history, Harichavank has undergone numerous restorations and modifications. In 1850, it became the summer residence of the Armenian Catholicos, leading to further expansion and the construction of new buildings, including offices, a refectory, a school, and a hostel. The monastery was also renowned for its school and scriptorium, which served as a repository of Armenian manuscripts and artworks. Excavations at the site have revealed remnants of ancient fortifications dating back to the 2nd century BC, indicating a long history of settlement in the area.
