Ughtasar Lake: Armenia's Ancient Petroglyph Treasure

Ughtasar Lake, situated at 3,300 meters above sea level in the Syunik region of Armenia, is a mesmerizing blend of natural beauty and ancient history. The lake itself is cradled within the caldera of an extinct volcano, a landscape characterized by rugged terrain, alpine meadows, and boulder streams. The name 'Ughtasar' is believed to be derived from the Armenian word for 'camel,' as the mountain resembles a kneeling camel. The lake's primary draw is the thousands of petroglyphs scattered around its shores. These rock carvings, etched into the dark volcanic stones, depict scenes of hunting, agriculture, animals, and various symbols, offering insights into the lives and beliefs of early inhabitants. The oldest carvings are believed to date back to the Paleolithic period, around 12,000 BCE, with continued carvings by later cultures through the early Iron Age. The petroglyphs may have had ritual or worship significance. Visiting Ughtasar Lake requires a journey by 4x4 vehicle due to the rough, unpaved roads. The area is typically accessible only from July to September due to snow cover. Despite the challenges in reaching it, the reward is an unparalleled experience of exploring ancient rock art in a stunning alpine setting.
