Nestled in the Lori region of Armenia, in the town of Akhtala, stands Aramyants Castle, a unique architectural landmark that whispers tales of ambition, philanthropy, and tragic fate. Built in 1905 by Mikael Aramyants, a prominent Armenian businessman, industrialist, and philanthropist, the castle is designed in the style of a European medieval castle, an unusual sight in the Armenian landscape.Aramyants, who made his fortune in silk, wool, and later oil, was inspired to build the castle after seeing a similar structure in Switzerland. He commissioned architect Mikhail Buzoglu to study the design and recreate it in Akhtala. The castle quickly became a cultural center, hosting famous figures of the time, including opera singer Fyodor Chaliapin, poet Hovhannes Tumanyan, and playwright Alexander Shirvanzade. The first tennis court in Armenia was located on the castle grounds. It even served as the location where the declaration of the First Republic of Armenia was adopted.Aramyants was known for his philanthropy, funding hospitals, schools, and infrastructure projects in the region. However, with the rise of Soviet power, his wealth was seized, and he died in poverty. Today, Aramyants Castle stands in an abandoned state, a historical and cultural monument included in the state list of immovable monuments since 2016. While there are currently no plans for its reconstruction, the castle remains a powerful symbol of Armenia's rich history and the legacy of one of its most influential figures. Visitors can explore the grounds and imagine the vibrant life that once filled its halls.
