Discover more about Gavazan

Gavazan, also known as the Swinging Column, is a unique monument within the Tatev Monastery complex in Armenia. This octagonal stone pillar, standing approximately 8 meters tall, was erected in 906 AD and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. What makes Gavazan remarkable is its ability to sway in response to even minor tremors, serving as an early warning system for earthquakes. Some claim it could also detect approaching armies. The column's design features an articulated construction at its base, allowing it to maintain a constant 90-degree angle to the Earth's surface, ensuring balance and stability. The upper pedestal stone is connected to the lower step by a movable hinge. This ingenious engineering has allowed Gavazan to survive invasions and earthquakes for over 1,100 years. Beyond its function as a seismograph, Gavazan also holds cultural and historical significance. It is believed to be associated with the celebration of Navasard, the ancient Armenian New Year. The column also served as an astronomical device. Today, Gavazan stands as a symbol of resilience and architectural ingenuity, attracting visitors who marvel at its unique construction and historical importance. Though it no longer tilts, it remains a reminder of the advanced knowledge and skills of medieval Armenian monks.
