History of Tatev Mountains

  • The Tatev Monastery, a jewel of Armenian architecture, was founded in the 9th century. It became one of the most important centers for Armenian culture, religion, and education. The monastery complex is perched on a plateau overlooking the Vorotan River Gorge and served as a fortress and spiritual center for the region. Scholars, scribes, and monks gathered here, making it a hub for learning and manuscript production.

  • During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Tatev Monastery played a critical role in the Armenian Renaissance. It housed the University of Tatev, one of the most prestigious educational institutions of medieval Armenia. The university specialized in the study of philosophy, theology, and science, and contributed significantly to the preservation and development of Armenian culture and scholarship during a period of foreign domination and internal strife.

  • On April 27, 1931, a devastating earthquake struck the region, causing significant damage to the Tatev Monastery and surrounding areas. The quake brought down parts of the monastery complex, including its famous Gavazan column, a unique architectural feature. Restoration efforts have been ongoing since then, with the Armenian government and various organizations working to preserve this historical treasure.

  • In October 2010, the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world, known as the Wings of Tatev, was opened. Stretching over 5.7 kilometers, it connects the village of Halidzor to the Tatev Monastery. This modern marvel has made the monastery more accessible to tourists and pilgrims, revitalizing the local economy and bringing renewed attention to the cultural and historical significance of the Tatev Mountains.

Tatev Mountains Essentials

  • The Tatev Mountains can be accessed from the nearest major city, Yerevan, which is approximately 250 kilometers away. The most convenient way to reach Tatev is by car or taxi, which takes around 4-5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus or minibus (marshrutka) to the town of Goris, and then hire a taxi to Tatev. For a unique experience, consider taking the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway, the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway, which offers stunning views of the Vorotan River Gorge.
  • Within the Tatev region, transportation options are limited. Walking is the best way to explore the immediate area around the Tatev Monastery. For trips to neighboring villages or more remote locations, hiring a taxi or arranging for a local guide with transportation is advisable. Rental cars are available in Yerevan if you prefer to drive yourself, but be prepared for winding and sometimes poorly maintained roads.
  • The official currency in Armenia is the Armenian Dram (AMD). While credit cards are accepted in some hotels and restaurants in larger towns, it is essential to carry cash, especially in rural areas like Tatev. ATMs are scarce in the mountains, so it is wise to withdraw enough cash in Yerevan or Goris before heading to Tatev.
  • Tatev is generally a safe destination, but it's always prudent to take standard safety precautions. Avoid venturing out alone at night, especially in remote areas. Petty crime like pickpocketing is rare but can happen in more crowded tourist spots. There are no specific high-crime areas targeting tourists, but staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings is always advisable.
  • In case of an emergency, dial 911 for immediate assistance. The nearest medical facilities are in the town of Goris. It is highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Pharmacies in Goris can provide over-the-counter medications for minor health issues. Ensure you have a local contact or guide who can assist in emergency situations.
  • Fashion: Do dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Avoid wearing revealing clothing. Religion: Do respect local customs and traditions. Always cover your head when entering churches and monasteries. Public Transport: Do be respectful and give up your seat to elderly passengers. Don’t eat or drink on public transport. Greetings: Do greet people with a handshake. A slight bow of the head is also a sign of respect. Eating & Drinking: Do try local delicacies and accept food offerings graciously. Don’t refuse hospitality, as it is considered impolite.
  • To experience Tatev Mountains like a local, visit the local markets where you can buy fresh produce and traditional Armenian goods. Engage with locals, as they are often friendly and willing to share stories about their history and culture. Don’t miss the Tatev Monastery, a historic and architectural gem. For a unique experience, take the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Vorotan River Gorge. Also, explore the hiking trails that offer stunning natural landscapes and a chance to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the mountains.
