The Tatev Monastery, a jewel of Armenian architecture, was founded in the 9th century. It became one of the most important centers for Armenian culture, religion, and education. The monastery complex is perched on a plateau overlooking the Vorotan River Gorge and served as a fortress and spiritual center for the region. Scholars, scribes, and monks gathered here, making it a hub for learning and manuscript production.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Tatev Monastery played a critical role in the Armenian Renaissance. It housed the University of Tatev, one of the most prestigious educational institutions of medieval Armenia. In October 2010, the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world, known as the Wings of Tatev, was opened. Stretching over 5.7 kilometers, it connects the village of Halidzor to the Tatev Monastery. ATMs are scarce in the mountains, so it is wise to withdraw enough cash in Yerevan or Goris before heading to Tatev.

Tatev is generally a safe destination, but it's always prudent to take standard safety precautions. Avoid venturing out alone at night, especially in remote areas. Petty crime like pickpocketing is rare but can happen in more crowded tourist spots. There are no specific high-crime areas targeting tourists, but staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings is always advisable.
