Discover more about Smbataberd

Smbataberd, meaning "Fortress of Smbat," is a remarkable medieval fortress situated between the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province. The fortress dates back to the 5th century, with evidence suggesting it may have existed even earlier. It was significantly fortified during the 10th century and further expanded in the 13th century under the Orbelian dynasty. Strategically positioned on a hilltop, Smbataberd offers commanding views of the surrounding valleys and deep gorges, making it a formidable defensive structure. The fortress is surrounded on three sides by steep ravines, with only the northern approach offering a less challenging path. The walls, constructed from large basalt stones, are well-preserved, showcasing the ingenuity of medieval Armenian builders. The fortress is divided into northern and southern sections, each with its own acropolis, and remnants of barracks and cisterns can still be found. Smbataberd played a crucial role in the region's history, serving as the primary military bastion for the town of Yeghegis and the surrounding areas. It was a symbol of Armenian resistance, successfully withstanding sieges, including one by the Sajid general Nasr in the early 10th century. Legend has it that the Seljuk Turks only captured the fortress by cutting off its water supply. Today, Smbataberd is a popular tourist destination, attracting hikers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking panoramic views of the Armenian landscape.
