Discover more about Tanahat Monastery

Tanahat Monastery, also known as Karmir Monastery, is a captivating historical site located near Yeghegnadzor in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Founded in the 8th century, the monastery stands on the site of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Anahit, blending Armenia's pre-Christian past with its rich Christian heritage. The monastery complex features the Church of St. Stepanos, constructed between 1273 and 1279 under the patronage of the Proshian princely family. Built from dark bluish basalt, the church showcases a cruciform interior and a 12-facet drum and dome. The adjacent 13th-century Surb Nshan (Holy Sign) Church features a bas-relief carving above the entrance depicting a hunting scene. Tanahat Monastery was also a significant cultural center, possibly the location of Gladzor University, one of Armenia's most prominent educational institutions in the Middle Ages. Famous students such as historian Stepanos Orbelian and architect Momik studied here. The monastery's well-preserved state and historical significance make it a must-see destination for those exploring Armenia's cultural landscape.
