Bjni Fortress: A Medieval Armenian Stronghold

Bjni Fortress, situated in the Kotayk Province of Armenia, is a captivating historical site that offers a glimpse into the region's rich heritage. Constructed between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Pahlavuni princes, the fortress served as a crucial defensive structure for the province of Nig. Chroniclers even referred to it as the "unapproachable abode of gods". Strategically perched on a mesa, the fortress is naturally protected by rocks on three sides, with pyramid-like walls guarding the north and west. Over the centuries, Bjni Fortress has witnessed numerous historical events, including invasions by Turkish soldiers and attacks by the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur. Despite the damage it has sustained, the fortress retains its historical importance and charm, drawing visitors to explore its ancient corridors and towers. Inside the fortress, remnants of various structures can be found, including residential buildings, a church dedicated to St. Gregory, and water cisterns. The St. Astvatsatsin Church, constructed in 1031, showcases Armenian medieval architectural traditions. Legends also speak of secret subterranean roads connecting the fortress to the Hrazdan River, used to transport resources during sieges.
