Bubali Bird Sanctuary: A Tranquil Oasis for Birdwatchers
Discover Aruba's natural beauty at Bubali Bird Sanctuary, a serene wetland home to diverse bird species and offering tranquil birdwatching experiences.
The Bubali Bird Sanctuary is a serene haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers visiting Aruba. Established in 1980, this protected area spans approximately 20 hectares and features interconnected man-made lakes, initially created as part of a wastewater treatment facility. These wetlands have become a lush oasis, attracting a diverse array of migratory and resident bird species. The sanctuary is home to over 80 species of birds, including herons, egrets, gulls, skimmers, coots, and ducks. Depending on the time of year, visitors can spot black-necked stilts, Bahamian pintails, lapwings, troupials, Caribbean parakeets, moorhens, coots, green herons, and egrets. The desert scrub vegetation along the seaward side provides habitat for nesting white-tailed nightjars, yellow warblers, burrowing owls, ruby-topaz hummingbirds, eared and common ground doves, and bananaquits. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via well-maintained trails and viewing platforms. The observation tower on the north side offers panoramic views of the landscape, allowing for excellent birdwatching opportunities. Informative signs are placed throughout the area, providing insights into the different species and the ecological significance of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is easily accessible and provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling beaches of Aruba.
