Discover more about Alice in Adelaide's Wonderland

Located in the picturesque Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka, 'Alice in Adelaide's Wonderland' is a delightful bronze sculpture that brings Lewis Carroll's timeless character to life. Created in 1962 by the talented local artist John Dowie AM, the life-size statue captures Alice in a moment of whimsical apprehension, as if startled by something behind her. The sculpture features a detailed frieze around its Waikerie stone base, showcasing beloved characters from *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland* and *Through the Looking-Glass*. Visitors will recognize the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Dodo, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee, all meticulously crafted. The statue was commissioned during the City of Adelaide's redevelopment of the East Park Lands, with a focus on creating family-friendly spaces. Norman and Josephine Lewis generously funded the project, initially inspired by the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, London. However, John Dowie successfully proposed Alice as a more fitting subject, given the city's connection to the name Adelaide, which shares etymological roots with Alice. Rymill Park itself offers a tranquil escape with a central lake, sprawling lawns, rose gardens, and mature trees providing ample shade. It's a popular spot for picnics, leisurely strolls, and family outings.
