Discover more about Hartley Street School

Hartley Street School stands as a testament to the history of education in Alice Springs. Established in 1929 to accommodate the town's growing population following the railway's arrival, the school initially consisted of two rooms. In 1945, architect B.C.G. Burnett designed a new kindergarten and classroom, distinguished by its octagonal shape and wooden floors, a stark contrast to the original building's simple design. The school played a pivotal role in the development of education in the region, most notably as the first home of the School of the Air in 1950. From a small studio within the school, lessons were broadcast to children living in isolated communities across the Northern Territory. The Royal Flying Doctor Service assisted in relaying the transmissions. The school operated until 1965, after which students and teachers relocated to a new school at the base of Anzac Hill. Today, Hartley Street School is a museum operated by the National Trust, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience a 1930s school setting. The museum features exhibits about the school's history, including its role in the School of the Air, and displays of historical educational materials. The octagonal room, in particular, is a highlight, showcasing a unique architectural style. The museum is wheelchair accessible and offers a shop with souvenirs. Group bookings are also available.
