Hou Wang Temple: A Piece of Chinese History in the Atherton Tablelands

Discover a unique piece of Chinese-Australian history at the Hou Wang Temple, a beautifully preserved heritage site in the Atherton Tablelands.

4.4

Nestled on the edge of Atherton, the Hou Wang Temple offers a unique window into the history of Chinese settlement in the Atherton Tablelands. Established in 1903, the temple was the heart of the local Chinatown, known as Cedar Camp, providing a spiritual and social focus for over a thousand Chinese residents. These settlers, many of whom had migrated south from the Palmer River goldfields, worked as timber cutters, market gardeners, and maize growers. The temple's construction reflects the resourcefulness of the early Chinese community. Due to the high cost of transporting materials, they used local cedar and black bean timber, combined with corrugated iron imported from Britain. The decorations and religious treasures, however, were sourced directly from China. The temple complex originally included a feasting hall, kitchen, store, and living quarters for a caretaker and visitors. Following World War I, many Chinese farming leases were revoked, leading to a decline in the community. The temple gradually fell into disrepair, but was saved from demolition and eventual neglect. In 1979, the Fong On family donated the temple to the National Trust of Queensland, who have since meticulously restored it. Today, the Hou Wang Temple stands as a museum, preserving a significant part of North Queensland's cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the temple's ornate interior, view original wood carvings, and learn about the history of the Chinese community through guided tours and interpretive displays.
