Discover more about Lake Eacham

Lake Eacham, cradled within the Crater Lakes National Park, is a natural wonder steeped in history and biodiversity. This serene, blue lake originated from a volcanic eruption over 12,000 years ago, when molten magma rose and heated the groundwater, resulting in massive explosions that created the crater. Over time, rainfall filled the void, forming the picturesque lake we see today. The local Aboriginal people, the Ngadjon-jii, call the lake Wiinggina and have their own ancient stories about its formation. Designated as a scenic reserve in 1888 and later a national park in 1934, Lake Eacham has long been recognized for its natural and recreational significance. The lake's water level can fluctuate by up to 4 meters between the wet and dry seasons, as it is solely replenished by rainfall. The lake is 65m deep. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear, calm waters, explore the 3km walking track that encircles the lake, or simply relax in the shaded picnic areas. The surrounding rainforest is home to diverse wildlife, including over 180 bird species, musky rat-kangaroos, turtles, and the elusive platypus. Keep an eye out for the Ulysses butterfly, with its giant blue wings. Lake Eacham offers a tranquil escape into nature, with opportunities for swimming, birdwatching, canoeing, and leisurely walks. The Rainforest Display Centre is located nearby.
