Broken Head Nature Reserve: Where Rainforest Meets the Sea

Broken Head Nature Reserve is a captivating coastal reserve located 6km south of Byron Bay, where the region's unique littoral rainforest thrives alongside secluded beaches. The 98-hectare reserve protects endangered plant communities and offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area. The reserve is co-managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Arakwal people, the Traditional Owners of the land, acknowledging the area's cultural significance. The prominent headlands provide shelter for the rainforest, which has adapted to the exposed conditions and salt-laden winds. Originally part of the 'Big Scrub,' a vast subtropical rainforest, Broken Head now contains many of the tree species that once thrived in the area. Visitors can explore the reserve through a network of walking tracks, including the popular Three Sisters Walking Track, which offers stunning views of the coastline and the iconic Three Sisters rock formation. According to Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, the rocks represent two sisters who drowned in the strong currents, serving as a warning to children. The reserve is also a haven for birdwatchers and animal lovers, with opportunities to spot migratory birds, whales, and diverse plant species. Broken Head's beaches, such as Broken Head Beach, Whites Beach and Kings Beach, offer a variety of recreational activities, including swimming, surfing, fishing, and picnicking. The reserve provides a peaceful escape from the crowds, where visitors can relax on the sand, explore the rainforest, and connect with nature.
