Getting There

  • Walking

    From Byron Bay's Main Beach, follow the coastal path east. This becomes a boardwalk leading to Lighthouse Road. Continue along Lighthouse Road, enjoying views of Tallow Beach, to reach the Cape Byron Lighthouse and lookout. The walk is approximately 3.7km and takes around 2 hours. Paid street parking is available near the Main Beach.

  • Public Transport

    Local bus companies, CDC NSW and Northern Rivers Buslines, offer services within Byron Bay. However, there is no direct public transport to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. From the Byron Bay Bus Interchange on Butler Street, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the lighthouse. Taxi fare is approximately $12-$15. Check local bus schedules for routes to the town center.

  • Driving

    From Byron Bay town center, take Lawson Street, which becomes Lighthouse Road, and follow it to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. Parking is available in a bitumen carpark near the Walgun Cape Byron Information Centre. Parking fees are $10 per vehicle per hour, and $4 per hour for motorcycles, with a maximum of 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day. Parking is limited, especially on weekends.

Cape Byron/Tallow Beach Lookout, situated within the Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area, provides breathtaking views from Australia's easternmost point. The lookout offers a stunning panorama encompassing the vast Pacific Ocean, the expansive Tallow Beach stretching south, and the lush hinterland. Tallow Beach, a 7-kilometer stretch of sand, lies south of the lookout. Its name originates from an 1864 shipwreck where casks of tallow (rendered beef and mutton fat) washed ashore. The northern end, known as Cosy Corner, provides sheltered surfing conditions. The Cape Byron Lighthouse Maritime Museum, located in the former lighthouse keeper's office, offers insights into the area's maritime history. The lighthouse itself, completed in 1901, remains an active beacon.
