Discover more about Captain Cook lookout & picnic area

Captain Cook Lookout is a scenic and historically significant spot in Byron Bay, offering visitors breathtaking views of the coastline. Named after Captain James Cook, who sailed along the eastern coast of Australia in 1770, the lookout provides a stunning vantage point to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. The lookout is part of the Cape Byron State Conservation Area, known for its coastal cliffs and diverse vegetation. From this elevated position, visitors can often spot dolphins playing in the surf and, during migration seasons (June to November), even whales making their way along the coast. The area is ideal for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sky is painted with vibrant colors. Beyond the views, Captain Cook Lookout features a well-maintained picnic area, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal amidst nature. The lookout also provides access to the Cape Byron walking track, a 3.7km loop that takes in coastal cliffs, rainforest, and beaches. The boardwalk from the lookout to Brooke Drive is accessible for prams and wheelchairs, though other parts of the track are steep. The Bundjalung people, the traditional owners of the land, called this area Cavanba, meaning 'meeting place'. While Cook did not land here, his passage marked the beginning of European exploration and settlement in the region. Today, the lookout blends natural beauty with historical significance, offering tranquility and adventure in one location.
