Canberra Carousel: A Timeless Ride

The Canberra Carousel, nestled in the heart of Civic's Petrie Plaza, offers a delightful step back in time. This heritage-listed merry-go-round has been a beloved Canberra attraction since it was unveiled on Canberra Day, March 13, 1974. However, its story began much earlier, in 1914, when it first operated on the St Kilda Esplanade in Melbourne. Designed and built by Herbert Thomson for German showman Anton Weniger, it was purchased by the City of Canberra in 1973 for $40,000.The carousel features 52 hand-carved wooden horses and two intricately detailed elephant carriages imported from Germany. The twisted brass poles were made in Scotland. A German fairground 69-key pipe organ provides jaunty accompaniment. Although the original steam engine, restored by volunteers from the Australian National University, is no longer in use, a modern electric motor keeps the carousel spinning. The organ, due to its delicate condition, is stored separately.Over the years, the carousel has undergone extensive restoration, with contributions from various organizations and volunteers. Today, a not-for-profit charity manages its day-to-day operation, with proceeds directed towards upkeep.
