Fulica bird hide is nestled within the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The wetlands, formed in 1964 due to the artificially high water table from Lake Burley Griffin, have become a significant sanctuary for over 200 bird species, including migratory birds from the northern hemisphere and inland Australia. Fulica hide, along with others such as Tadorna, Ardea, Bittern and Cygnus, offers a vantage point to observe the diverse birdlife without disturbing their natural habitat. From Fulica, one might spot Black Ducks, Eurasian Coots, Dusky Moorhens, and Purple Swamphens. Lucky observers may also see Baillon's and Spotted Crakes hiding within the reedbeds. The wetlands themselves have a rich history, with links to World War I training trenches and Parliament House. Today, the reserve is managed by the ACT Parks and Conservation Service and the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, with ongoing efforts to remove invasive weeds and revegetate with native plants. Visitors can explore the wetlands via several walking trails, including Kellys Swamp Loop, The Woodland Walk, and The Billabong Walk.
