Discover more about Walhalla Goldfields Railway

The Walhalla Goldfields Railway offers a unique journey into Victoria's gold mining past. The railway operates on a restored section of the historic Moe-Walhalla line, which was originally constructed between 1904 and 1910. The line was intended to revitalize Walhalla, which was in decline as gold mining became less profitable. Today, the railway provides a scenic 4-km ride from Walhalla to Thomson Station, traversing the Stringers Creek Gorge. The journey involves crossing six large trestle bridges that criss-cross Stringers Creek, offering passengers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The train then passes through Happy Creek and crosses the Thomson River Bridge before arriving at Thomson Station. At Thomson Station, visitors can explore the area before reboarding for the return trip to Walhalla. The Walhalla Goldfields Railway is operated and maintained by volunteers, and has been operating as a tourist railway since it reopened in 1994. The railway is a not-for-profit group.
