    Discover more about Fish Falls

Located within the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, Fish Falls presents a tranquil escape into nature's beauty. The falls cascade 60 meters over terraced rocks, creating a stunning visual as the water flows into the pool below throughout the year. The falls are best viewed after rains when there is heavier flow, and during spring when wildflowers are in bloom. The most popular access to Fish Falls is via a 4.6-kilometer return walk from the Zumsteins Picnic Area. This moderately challenging trail meanders alongside the MacKenzie River, providing scenic views along the way. The trail involves some rock and water crossings and can be slippery in sections, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Alternatively, a slightly shorter 3.8-kilometer walk from the MacKenzie Falls carpark is also an option, though it includes a steep descent via a series of steps to the base of MacKenzie Falls, before following the river downstream to Fish Falls. Zumsteins, the starting point for many visitors, holds historical significance as the site of a former retreat established by Walter Zumstein, a World War I veteran. In the 1930s, Zumstein and his wife built rammed earth cottages, a tennis court, and a swimming pool fed by the river. Today, Zumsteins offers accessible facilities including toilets, picnic spots, electric barbecues, and a timber boardwalk along the MacKenzie River. While swimming in the MacKenzie River is generally discouraged due to strong currents and submerged rocks, the pool at the base of Fish Falls is often used as a spot to cool off. However, caution is advised, and swimming is at your own risk.
