The park lies on the Country of the Brabralung clan, with a rich history of tribal conflict, ceremonies, and community life. The Den of Nargun, a cave behind a waterfall, is a place of great cultural importance, especially for women, and visitors are asked to respect this sacred site by not entering the cave. According to Gunaikurnai legend, the Nargun is a fierce, half-human, half-stone creature that lives in the cave.The park originated as Glenaladale National Park in 1963 and was expanded and renamed Mitchell River National Park in 1986. Today, the park offers a range of recreational activities, including bushwalking, camping, canoeing, and four-wheel driving. Popular spots include the Den of Nargun picnic area, Billy Goat Bend, and Angusvale.
