Situated on the Kreuzbergl, a recreational area near the city center, the observatory combines scientific exploration with panoramic views.Founded to promote astronomy and make it accessible, the Sternwarte Klagenfurt has evolved into an educational and research facility. Its location, away from city lights, provides optimal viewing conditions. The observatory's main instrument is a Coude refractor telescope, allowing detailed observation of planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies from a fixed position, making it ideal for public viewing sessions.Visitors can participate in guided tours led by members of the Astronomische Vereinigung Kärntens, learning about astronomy, star mapping, and celestial bodies. These tours often include hands-on demonstrations using the telescopes. Lectures and presentations cover topics from the solar system to cosmology, making complex concepts accessible. The Kreuzberglkirche, a historic church near the observatory, is another point of interest.The Kreuzbergl Observatory was built on a viewing platform constructed in 1895 in honor of Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Sissi. In 1965, the observatory was added to the old stone observation tower, offering visitors views of the sky, the Klagenfurt basin, and the Karawanken mountains.
