Discover more about Kaiserklamm

Kaiserklamm, nestled in the Brandenberg Alps of Tyrol, Austria, is a breathtaking gorge carved by the Brandenberger Ache river. This natural wonder, located near the village of Brandenberg, is a testament to the power of nature and the ingenuity of human adaptation. Historically, the Kaiserklamm played a vital role in the region's timber industry. From the 16th century until 1966, the gorge was used for timber drifting, where logs were floated down the river to sawmills. The narrow paths alongside the river, originally hewn out of the rock by lumberjacks, are still accessible today. These paths, widened with drilling machines and explosives, allowed workers to manage log jams and ensure the smooth passage of timber. The last timber drift took place in 1966, but the traces of this history are still visible throughout the gorge. The gorge gets its name from Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth, who visited the area in the 19th century. The Kaiserhaus, a 500-year-old inn near the gorge entrance, hosted the imperial couple, and the room where they stayed is preserved to this day. According to local lore, the Emperor enjoyed watching the lumberjacks at work and used the gorge as a starting point for hunting expeditions. Today, Kaiserklamm is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The well-secured Triftsteig trail leads visitors through the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise-green waters and steep rock faces. The 1-kilometer trail includes bridges, rock archways, and tunnels, making the hike both easy and captivating. Safety harnesses for children are available at the Kaiserhaus, making it a family-friendly adventure. Visitors can extend their experience by exploring the surrounding area, including the Kaiserhaus inn, where they can savor local delicacies like Prugeltorte. The inn also features a playground with a petting zoo, making it a hit with families. For those seeking longer hikes, trails lead to the Erzherzog Johann Splash Dam and the hamlet of Pinegg.
