Getting There

  • Driving

    From Moos in Passeier, drive along the Timmelsjochstrasse (SS44 bis) towards the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road. The Telescope is located along the road, part of the Timmelsjoch Experience. Note that the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is a toll road on the Austrian side. Cars are permitted, but there are restrictions for buses, lorries, and vehicles with trailers on the Italian side. Check the road is open, as it is usually closed from October to May. Toll for cars is about €24 for a return journey.

  • Public Transport

    From Moos in Passeier, take bus line 242 towards Timmelsjoch. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes. The Telescope is one of the Timmelsjoch Experience stations along the High Alpine Road. A single bus fare costs approximately €3-€5. Note that the bus service may be limited during off-season.

Located beneath the Scheibkopf mountain, the Timmelsjoch Telescope provides a breathtaking 180° panorama of the Texelgruppe Nature Reserve. This architectural sculpture is one of the stations of the Timmelsjoch Experience, a project designed to enrich the journey across the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road with insights into the region's nature and culture. The telescope itself directs viewers' gaze towards the Granatkogel (3,304 m) and Hohe First (3,403 m), prominent peaks adorned with eternal glacial ice. Information panels detail the geology of the Passeier Valley and its diverse rock formations, enhancing the viewing experience. The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road, where the Telescope is located, has been an important link between northern and southern Europe since the Stone Age. The modern road, a marvel of engineering with around 30 hairpin bends, opened in 1959 and has become a popular route for motorists, motorcyclists, and cyclists. The Timmelsjoch Experience enhances this journey with several architectural installations, including the Telescope, Pass Museum, Garnets, Smugglers and Walkway, each offering a unique perspective on the region.
