The Kapitelschwemme, a Baroque horse well, graces Kapitelplatz in Salzburg's Old Town, near the Salzburg Cathedral. This square is a hub for locals and tourists, framed by impressive architecture.Originally built in the early 17th century, the fountain received its current Baroque appearance in 1732 under Prince Archbishop Firmian. Designed by Franz Anton Danreiter and sculpted by Josef Anton Pfaffinger, it was modeled after Roman fountains. The fountain once served as a watering place for horses. The centerpiece is a statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, holding a trident and crown while mounted on a seahorse. Two Tritons flank Neptune, enhancing the fountain's mythological theme. Above Neptune, a plate displays Archbishop Leopold von Firmian's coat of arms and a Latin inscription noting his role in building the fountain. The capitalized letters in the inscription form a chronogram that equals 1732, the year of construction.Kapitelplatz also features a giant chessboard, the sculpture 'Sphaera', and views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Throughout the year, Kapitelplatz hosts events and festivals, adding to its vibrant atmosphere.
