Mirabell Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a testament to Salzburg's rich history and architectural beauty. Constructed in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for Salome Alt and their 15 children, the palace was initially named Altenau Palace. After Raitenau's death, his successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, renamed it Mirabell, derived from the Italian words 'mirabile' (admirable) and 'bella' (beautiful). In the early 18th century, Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach commissioned a Baroque redesign by Lukas von Hildebrandt, creating the cohesive complex seen today. A fire in 1818 caused significant damage, but the Marble Hall and grand marble staircase survived. The palace's current Neoclassical appearance is attributed to Peter de Nobile, who oversaw its restoration. The Marble Hall, once the archbishop's ballroom, is now a sought-after wedding venue and concert hall, where Leopold Mozart and his children, Wolfgang and Nannerl, once performed. The Angel Staircase, created by Georg Raphael Donner, features charming putti adorning the marble balustrade. The Mirabell Gardens, designed in 1687 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, are considered some of Europe's most beautiful Baroque gardens. They feature geometrically arranged gardens, mythology-themed statues, a hedge theater, and the Pegasus Fountain, famously featured in 'The Sound of Music'. The gardens were opened to the public in 1854 by Emperor Franz Joseph.Today, Mirabell Palace houses the offices of the Salzburg mayor and the city council. The Marble Hall continues to host concerts, conferences, and award ceremonies. The palace and gardens are easily accessible and offer barrier-free access.
