Located in the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town), the Residenzbrunnen stands as the centerpiece of the Residenzplatz. This magnificent Baroque fountain, constructed between 1656 and 1661, is one of the largest of its kind outside of Italy. Commissioned by Prince Archbishop Guidobald von Thun, the fountain was designed by Tommaso di Garona, with Antonio Dario serving as chief engineer. The fountain is made from Untersberg marble and features a multi-tiered design. The base consists of four sea horses surrounding a rock adorned with marine animals and plants. Above this, four men, or Atlases, support a bowl, which in turn holds three dolphins balancing another basin. The uppermost basin features Triton, who is blowing water into the air from a conch shell. The Residenzbrunnen is not only a visual spectacle but also a symbol of Salzburg's power and wealth during the Baroque era. The Residenzplatz itself was created in the late 16th century by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who demolished 55 burgher houses and a cemetery to create a grand public space. Today, the Residenzbrunnen remains a popular attraction and a central meeting point in Salzburg, serving as a venue for various events, including the Salzburg Festival and the Christmas Market.
