Walking
From Salzburg's Old Town, walk towards Kapitelplatz, at the foot of the fortress. From there, follow Festungsgasse to the funicular valley station or continue along the path leading uphill to the fortress. The walk uphill takes approximately 15-20 minutes and is steep. Note that the footpath is not fully accessible. Alternatively, the funicular provides easy access to the fortress.
Public Transport
From Salzburg Central Station, take trolleybus lines 1, 3, 5, 6, or 25 to the Rathaus or Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz stop. From there, walk through Getreidegasse, Alter Markt, Residenzplatz, Domplatz, and Kapitelplatz to Festungsgasse. The funicular valley station is located there. Alternatively, from Salzburg Hbf, the line 160 bus goes directly to Salzburg Rathaus. A single fare for public transport is approximately €1-€3.
Funicular
The FestungsBahn funicular provides direct access to Hohensalzburg Fortress from Festungsgasse. The funicular runs every 10 minutes, and the ride takes less than a minute. A round-trip funicular ticket is included in some fortress tickets. If purchased separately, expect to pay around €12 for adults.
