Located within the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Festungsmuseum provides a window into the history of both the fortress itself and the city of Salzburg. Opened in 1952, the museum is one of Austria's most visited, with roots stretching back to the First World War when the idea of a museum within the fortress first took hold. The museum showcases the architectural development of Hohensalzburg Fortress, the lives of the Salzburg Archbishops, and aspects of Salzburg during the Middle Ages. Exhibits include Roman coins, medieval weaponry and armor, and even torture instruments, illustrating the fortress's strategic importance and the lives of its inhabitants through the centuries. The museum also highlights significant events, such as the siege of 1526, and influential figures like Prince Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, who shaped the fortress's current appearance around 1500. The Festungsmuseum is more than just a collection of artifacts; it's an immersive experience enhanced by modern, interactive displays. Visitors can explore 13 rooms, each dedicated to a different theme, providing insights into medieval life, art, culture, and Salzburg's rich history.
