Kapitelschwemme: A Baroque Fountain in Salzburg

The Kapitelschwemme, a Baroque horse well, graces the Kapitelplatz in Salzburg's Old Town, adjacent to the Salzburg Cathedral. Constructed in 1732 under Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, it exemplifies the grandeur of 18th-century Baroque architecture. The fountain once served as a watering place for horses and now stands as a captivating historical landmark.The Kapitelschwemme is adorned with intricate sculptures and decorative elements. The statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, stands at the center riding a seahorse. Neptune holds his trident and wears a crown, symbolizing his control over water. Two Triton figures flank Neptune, blowing into conch shells, enhancing the fountain's mythological theme. The fountain's design is reminiscent of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, leading some tourists to toss coins into it.The Kapitelplatz, where the Kapitelschwemme is located, is a large square in Salzburg's Old Town. Several buildings surround the Kapitelplatz, including the bishop’s palace and administrative buildings of Salzburg University and the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The square also offers views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
