Discover more about Mönchsberg Elevator

The Mönchsberg Elevator, or MönchsbergAufzug, provides a rapid and convenient link between Salzburg's historic district and the summit of Mönchsberg. For over 130 years, this elevator has been transporting locals and tourists alike to an elevation of 485 meters in a mere 30 seconds. Originally constructed in 1890, the elevator was the vision of Karl Leitner, who sought to utilize electricity from his power plant to transport tourists to the hills. The initial design differed from the current one, running along the flank of the Mönchsberg. Today, the elevator operates within a tunnel inside the rock, carrying passengers 60 meters vertically. Upon exiting the elevator, you'll find yourself at the entrance to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, a treasure trove of contemporary art. The panoramic terrace offers unparalleled views of Salzburg's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain itself is a local recreation area, inviting visitors to explore walking trails, fortifications, and natural beauty. For those seeking refreshment, Restaurant M32 offers fine dining with equally stunning views.
