Discover more about Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzbrunnen is a magnificent fountain in Salzburg's Residenzplatz, a stately square in the Altstadt (Old Town). The square itself was established in the late 16th century by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who sought to create a grand public space. To make way for the square, 55 burgher houses and a cemetery were demolished. The Residenzbrunnen was constructed between 1656 and 1661 during the reign of Prince Archbishop Guidobald von Thun. Tommaso di Garona designed the fountain, with Antonio Dario serving as chief engineer. The fountain is made of Untersberg marble and is the largest Baroque fountain in Central Europe. The fountain features a multi-tiered design with sculptures of mythological figures and animals. Four sea horses surround the base, while four men (Atlases) carry a bowl. Three dolphins support another basin, topped by a statue of Triton blowing a conch shell. The Residenzbrunnen is not only a visual delight but also a testament to Salzburg's artistic and cultural heritage. The fountain is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike and a central meeting point in the city.
